Uncovering the Unknowns of 3D Printing
PRINT your REALITY takes you to the dark side of 3D
If you want to get a closer look at the dark side of 3D printing, check out the just-released collaboration between Browntourage and Iranian artist Morehshin Allahyari. Part adventure, part call-to-action, PRINT your REALITY is a virtual environment where you can explore some of Morehshin’s work and unlock a series of video chats with the artist. A landscape of cute and curious hybrid artifacts – like machine gun Barbie, Playboy bunny clippers, a bat-cum-radio, and a very sus dog – turns out to be a 3D-printed archive of forbidden life in Iran. As Morehshin puts it, “the ridiculousness is the message.” Dive deeper to find 3D reconstructions of artifacts destroyed by ISIS, uncover plastic’s mysteries, and end up in the warm embrace of octopus tentacles.
With 3D printing poised to make big changes in fabrication and manufacturing, PRINT your REALITY is a clever and critical introduction to possible uses of 3D printing for cultural producers, archivists, and anyone else looking to imagine and create new worlds. The project is produced by: Tonia Beglari (web design, development), Lara Sarkissian (film, edit), Saluzdina Banderas (film, edit), and Hawa Arsala (interview, copy).
